Safe & Secure Parking

The locality of Okopako Lodge makes it ideal for guests to use as a base when riding around the far north, whether it is to the top - Cape Reinga or for day rides where you can do loop rides to visit either coasts or to the Bay of Islands and return home to relax at this quiet location.

Okopako Lodge provides reasonably priced accommodation within a rural setting and has a comfortable lounge with fireplace, a large kitchen with gas cooking and hot water, and panoramic views of the countryside, native bush and the Hokianga Harbour.

Okopako Lodge offers a variety of options from double, twin, family or single rooms as well as onsite cabins and an onsite caravan, camp sites and camper van parking areas; all with a separate amenities block (with a smaller, well-equipped kitchen). This accommodation is ideal for solo riders, couples or larger groups of adventure riders. All beds are made up, so if you don’t want to carry your camping gear you can relax as soon as you arrive.

During your stay there may be seasonal organic produce available for purchase as along with the organic vegetable garden with established fruit trees, a worm farm are also features of Okopako.

You can even have a day off the bike and take a hike as the DOC walkways begin at the gate and there are also some walks on the farm itself. Half the farm is in native kauri of which you can enjoy the spectacular views of the native kauri forest. At night, you can stargaze while listening to the Morepork and Kiwis call at night so there is certainly no need for a TV here!

Located not far from Opononi and the Omapere beaches, you can buy supplies for a barbeque meal and of course the ride through the Waipoua Kauri Forest where Tanē Mahuta resides is a must. The Rawene car ferry offers easy access to some amazing gravel roads on the other side of the harbour.

Kristina & Charlie

Charlie and Kristina have managed Okopako Lodge for the past three years after taking the property on from Kristina’s parents, Lois and Nils King, who established Okopako Lodge in 1993.

Charlie was born in Switzerland before his parents immigrated to New Zealand. He speaks Swiss German and lived and worked in Switzerland in the 1980s completing his compulsory military services while there. He is a qualified Automotive Engineer, as well as had a painting and decorating, and then a roofing business in the Waikato and Bay of Plenty. Before moving to the Hokianga in 2022, Charlie worked at Fonterra Te Rapa Cream Products for twenty years as a Process Operator, Maintenance Fitter and Operator Trainer.

Charlie is a mad keen motorcyclist with a penchant for BMWs and adventure riding so he can advise you of some of the circuits around Northland. (He even convinced Kristina to become a ‘bikie chick’ (pillion passenger only) when she turned 50!)

Kristina currently works (offsite) as the Health and Safety Adviser for Hauora Hokianga, the local health services provider, where she previously worked as the Workforce Development Lead, managed the development of a values-based strategic plan, and implemented a rural health interprofessional programme (for the University of Auckland). Her background is in tertiary education management having spent almost 25 years working in NZ universities. Kristina has a PhD in Intercultural German Studies, speaks fluent German, and in her ‘spare’ time manages the New Zealand/German Student Exchange.
